Danczuk: It's time for the spin to stop, says Councillor Kelly

Date published: 17 August 2016

Lib Dem Leader in Rochdale, Councillor Andy Kelly has accused Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk of "...desperately trying to spin his way out of trouble".

He was speaking after an unnamed 'source' close to Mr Danczuk briefed the MEN that the MP was "neither drunk nor hit his ex-wife' despite spending two days in police cells in Spain.

He also accused Mr Danczuk's 'source' of completely misrepresenting the Spanish legal system. Mr Danczuk claimed that the fact that he was released without charge 'proved' that he was completely innocent.

Councillor Kelly said: "I have consulted a Spanish legal expert and they tell me that Danczuk's being released without charge is not the same as being innocent. The fact of the matter is that because Karen Danczuk refused to confirm allegations that she made to police to the courts - it would be virtually impossible to prosecute. It's clear that something happened on that fateful night in Spain. Why else would Danczuk spend two nights in police custody?

"There are numerous questions for Danczuk to answer. Why were the police called? What caused the injuries that Karen was hospitalised for? Was she pressurised into silence?

"Mr Danczuk's 'source' claimed that '...if there was any evidence at all that Simon had assaulted Karen, he would have immediately faced charges'. This is simply not true. We are dealing with allegations of serious, systematic domestic violence here. It's time for the spin to stop. Danczuk should be trying to seek help not desperately spinning his way of trouble. Let's not forget that this isn't the first time allegations like this have been levelled at Danczuk."
