A man has died after being hit by a car as he walked on the M66 motorway near Heywood, police say.
He is believed to have been walking along the carriageway between junctions one and two at about 02:00am.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "He has been struck by a car and then struck by three other vehicles. He was declared dead at the scene."
Emergency services have been at the scene overnight and investigation work is being carried out.
The motorway remains closed in both directions between Ramsbottom and Bury and a diversion has been put in place.
