Young entrepreneurs get a tasty profit

Date published: 24 May 2016

English language learners from Hopwood Hall College have raised almost £200 for Springhill Hospice by holding an Entrepreneur’s Fair.

The event was designed to inspire young people with the spirit of enterprise and develop their employability skills.

Each group of four was provided with £10 seed money to invest and then tasked with putting a business idea into practice; the group who made the biggest profit would receive free cinema tickets.

So, the young entrepreneur’s set about creating mini businesses, which featured a plethora of products and services including: cake stalls, competitions, African hair design, jewellery, milkshakes and market stalls.

The winning team members were Aya Saadoon, 19, Ali Reza Farhadi, 19, Embalo Ussuman, 17, and Edgar Ngoma,18, who made a very impressive £36.80 profit on the £10 investment and Saydul Islam,18, and Mateusz Skonecki,17, who made £8.20 profit.

Aya Saadoon said, “I really enjoyed this project, because it helped me to understand work and business and how to make a profit.”

English for Speakers of Other Languages Programme Manager David Perry said, “The learners worked really hard on this. Choosing winners was very difficult as a number of groups made a very good profit.”
