Man and woman hospitalised after Townhead Junction smash

Date published: 22 April 2016

A man and woman were rushed to hospital on Thursday night (21 April) after another accident at the newly 'improved' Townhead junction.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene at 5.40pm after calls that a man had suffered head injuries following a collision involving a White Vauxhaull Insignia.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a woman in the same car as the man suffered seatbelt injuries and was also taken to hospital.

This latest collision is believed to be the first since Rochdale Borough Council carried out improvement works earlier this month, with the intention of making the junction safer.

Since November last year, at least 15 accidents have happened at the junction, prompting the Council to take action and install a right turn facility.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers arrived on scene at Townhead junction at 17.40 after calls of a collision. Police then called the ambulance service to attend to a man and a woman who had suffered injuries. The road was temporarily blocked but was cleared up as soon as possible.”

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics had taken the man and woman to Fairfield General Hospital.
