Trams in Rochdale were suspended this morning after a tram and a delivery truck collided on Drake Street (Monday 11 April).

Passengers were escorted off the tram and sent on foot to the town centre as police officers arrived on the scene at 9.40am.

Tram windows were smashed as transport officers tried to move the truck out of the way, but nobody was hurt in the incident.

Witness Daniel McHale said: “The truck was stationary, it was parked up, and the tram came hurtling down the road. There was a sort of crunching sounds and everything stopped.

“The truck was there to make a delivery, and it is parked there a lot. Nothing like this usually happens. I’m just glad nobody was hurt.”

The road is currently blocked to traffic and no Metrolink services are running between Rochdale train station and Rochdale town centre.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers arrived on scene at 9.40am after a collision between a truck and a tram. Enquiries are ongoing.”
