Extreme pornography prosecutions double in Greater Manchester
Date published: 17 March 2016
The number of prosecutions related to obscene pornography has doubled in Greater Manchester, it has been revealed.
Troubling new statistics from the Home Office show that hundreds of investigations have taken place into internet users’ downloads of illegal material including extreme violence and rape.
Figures show that there were 575 prosecutions for people viewing extreme pornography in Greater Manchester last year. These figures do not include cases related to child sexual abuse, as they are recorded independently.
In the eyes of the law, the elements of an ‘extreme image’ shows that the image is pornographic, this it is grossly offensive or of an obscene character, and that the image portrays in an explicit and extreme way acts set out in section 63 (7).
