Hundreds of people lined the platform at Heywood train station (Saturday 9 January) to catch a glimpse of The Flying Scotsman.

After undergoing a £4.2m restoration project the locomotive has been making journeys from Bury to Heywood and Rawtenstall and will continue to make journeys on Sunday (10 January) and next weekend (Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 January).

Ian Woodsworth, who was at Heywood train station to see the iconic train, said: “I just wanted to come along and have a look at The Scotsman. It was something I knew about as a child and when I saw it on the news, I decided to come along.”

Trish, who saw the locomotive being restored with her late husband, decided to capture the historic moment in memory of him. She said: “We went to the East Lancashire Railway to see it being built and unfortunately my husband passed away recently so I have come along to take some pictures for him. It is a special day.”

Iris Corns had seen the locomotive in the art museum and couldn’t wait to see it in steam. She said: “I saw it in the art museum with my cousin from Canada and it was great to see. I then saw it again with my granddaughter, so I knew that when it was coming to Heywood I would come along and get a photo of it coming in to the station to send to my cousin in Canada and to show to my granddaughter.”

Tony Pearson said: “I just wanted to see the Scotsman really. Heywood is a nice station to come to for these kind of things.”

Darryl Whitelegge took his grandson William along to see the steam engine. He said: “I used to do train spotting when I was younger so this is something I was interested in. Me and my wife came along and we brought our grandson to see it as well, who has been looking forward to it.”

The engine has been restored for York’s National Railway Museum (NRM) with specialist engineers at Riley and Son Ltd starting work on the engine in 2006.

Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the Flying Scotsman was built by London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) at Doncaster Works in 1923 at a cost of £7,944.

This weekend has been the first weekend that the Scotsman has been in steam for over a decade
