Not Forgotten Association visit to Buckingham Palace for garden party

Harry Mills, member of ‘The Not Forgotten Association’ charity service and Chairman of the Lancashire Veterans Association, along with his wife, attended a garden party hosted by the Princess Royal, Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace.

Speaking of the day, Harry said: “Although it was founded almost 100 years ago (before the Royal British Legion), it occurs to me that many people are not familiar with this splendid association.

“In 1919, the American Opera singer Marta Cunningham was shocked to discover that there were thousands of wounded servicemen in hospitals across the UK. Their morale was extremely low, and they felt forgotten by the country for whom they had fought so bravely.

“She was determined to try and improve this so arranged afternoons out and this annual garden party for them.

“Over the years it has expanded to offer additional help including holidays, outings and donations of household items.

“Any sick or disabled veteran or serving member of the Armed Forces is eligible to apply for assistance from the association. If they wish they can even speak to me for further information.”

He continued: “We at the Lancashire Veterans Association are proud of our service to this country.”

The Not Forgotten Association Garden Party is attended by Princess Anne every year and provides entertainment, leisure and recreation for the serving wounded, injured or sick. The charity also helps ex-service men and women with disabilities.

Every year, the Queen hosts three garden parties at Buckingham Palace to recognise and reward public service. She also hosts one in Scotland at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Additionally, she grants permission for two special garden parties to be hosted by members of the Royal Family in the Gardens at Buckingham Palace; one of these being for the Not Forgotten Association.

Over 30,000 guests are welcomed to the palace each year.
