Blast off for Great Science Share

Rockets, magnets, and electricity were among many of the things on test at Lowerplace primary school as part of the national Great Science Share.

Several schools from across the borough came to Lowerplace to show off their scientific investigations to an enthralled audience of budding scientists. Pupils from Lowerplace, Milnrow Parish, Belfield, St Andrew’s, Moorhouse and Stanley Road primary schools all came together to demonstrate their scientific knowledge on a wide variety of experiments.

This event was part of a national programme of events aimed at inspiring young people in to science and engineering, with over 35,000 children taking part across the country.

Pupils and teachers then chose their favourite displays from all that was on show and the top two groups were Milnrow Parish for their work on the PH scale and Lowerplace Primary for their magnet investigations work.

Chris Lowe, science teacher at Lowerplace said: “I am so proud of all the young people who have come here today and displayed such astounding scientific knowledge. Clearly pupils have put a lot of work in to this and this has made it such a wonderful event. We’re really passionate about science and I was delighted to see such enthusiasm from all the young people.”

Lowerplace Primary is no stranger to all things super science; it proudly boasts a new Phiz Lab which was given to the school by former pupil Sir Peter Ogden. The lab is open to schools across Rochdale for them to come and share their passion for science.

Councillor Kieran Heakin, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “It is great to see events like this taking place in schools and clearly getting our young people interested in science. We really want young people to get involved in science and with Dippy coming to Rochdale there are so many opportunities for our young people to learn, right here in Rochdale.”
