Empowering Education awards at Castlemere Community Centre

Date published: 12 March 2018

Empowering Education had their first annual awards launch at Castlemere Community Centre on (Saturday 10 March).

Inspirational speakers from all over Rochdale attended to speak about women empowering each other and inspiring one another to do better, and the barriers they broke to achieve their goals in life.

Attendees included the Mayor and Mayoress, Ian and Christine Duckworth, Councillor Cecile Biant, Saiqa Naz from Aurora Wellbeing, Dr Ghazala Tabbasum from Leeds Becket University, and Sadia Tabassam, a local barrister.

Kalsoom Khanum, event organiser and local resident, said: “This inspirational event was organised to send a clear message to our society that we need to work together to find positive ways of tackling isolation, loneliness and deprivation. We must work together and inspire women to empower one another.

“We are so proud of all of our learners and the progress they have made through English My Way.

“When you think about where they were at the start of their learning journey, most were not able to speak a word of English. They are now speaking to people in shops, having conversations with doctors or their children’s teachers and making friends with the other learners in class.

“It is not a small barrier they have overcome, but something very big for the individuals.”
