Hopwood Hall Estate has been the subject of several community events recently.

The Middleton Archaeological Society hosted a standing-room-only crowd at The Olde Boar’s Head for a presentation by local historian Geoff Wellens and Hopwood DePree of Hopwood Hall on Thursday 25 January.

The talk covered centuries of history of the Hopwood Hall Estate featuring rarely seen photographs as well as a discussion about the plans for the future.

Many guests were particularly fascinated by the Hopwood connection to Middleton dating from 1277, and perhaps earlier, to modern day.

Geoff Wellens said: “We were thrilled with the turnout.”

Hopwood DePree said: “Many people signed up to join the Friends of Hopwood Hall Estate.”

“The room was so packed some people couldn’t get it.

“We are planning to have more talks in the future so there will be more opportunities for the community to get involved and participate.”

Hopwood DePree spoke to the Middleton Rotary Club on Monday 29 January, and received a warm welcome with Rotary members asking how they can help.

Rotary member Helen Jungmayr spoke afterward and praised Mr DePree and his team of volunteers for their efforts to rescue an important part of Middleton’s heritage.

Mr DePree said: “Saving Hopwood Hall is a monumental project and it will need an army of support. Thankfully, the interest and support from the community is incredible.”
