Middleton Rotary Club donates £100 to TUSC Uganda

In appreciation Bev Yarwood volunteering to help Middleton Rotary Club with their Father Christmas Float collection, the club has donated £100 to TUSC Uganda.

President Ged Heatherington said: “Bev’s help was much needed and greatly appreciated by the club. So much so the club decided to donate £100 to Bev’s favourite charity, TUSC Uganda, a small charity organisation which provides transport for sick and disabled children and pregnant women with health needs from villages around Jinja, Uganda, to clinics and hospitals.”

Carol Mitchell, TUSC Uganda, said: “We would like to thank Middleton Rotary Club who have been so kind.

“Every single penny that we are gifted goes into actually running our vehicle so that we can take children, pregnant women, or other vulnerable people for healthcare.

“Our 'passengers are mostly from poor village communities that exist from subsistence farming and there is very little 'spare' money in these families, so health care is often left until things get really serious, which is dangerous and far too often worse. We will also try and prevent ill health by taking healthcare workers into villages to see those who default from attending follow-up or to obtain their HIV or TB medicines.

“Every Friday we take around 12-16 children with profound disabilities for physio and these children and their carers are now a strong and mutually supportive group. Other days will see us transporting very sick people to the national hospital in Kampala when they have been identified by medics at the 'main hospital' in Jinja (the area we operate from) who feel that the only chance for them is to be taken to the bigger and better equipped hospital.

“The local clinic to our project manager often calls him when a pregnancy/labour has become complicated and he will rush the lady into Jinja for emergency care, and we have had two babies born in our vehicle.

“We also provide nets and soap when funds allow and we undertake health education and liaison with other organisations who also work to support the sick and disabled.”
