Countdown to Christmas – the big switch on

Date published: 12 November 2015

Deck the halls with boughs of holly and get down to Rochdale Town Hall on Saturday 21 November for the Christmas Lights Switch On – marking the start of the festive season.

Festive Market

As well as the switch on show, live music and fireworks you can pick up some imaginative early presents at the festive market inside Rochdale Town Hall from 1pm with local stalls selling gifts, clothing, accessories, handmade cards, advent calendars and much more. Treat yourself to winter afternoon teas and seasonal food and drink in the Christmas Cafe, where it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Live music and entertainment

If that isn’t enough to get you into a festive party mood, from 4pm there’s live outdoor entertainment hosted by Revolution 96.2, with a host of great local acts, including X Factor star Danny Dearden from Littleborough and up and coming singer Gem O’Reilly. Wardle Community Brass Band will play festive favourites and there’s even an appearance by the big man himself – Father Christmas.

So wrap up warm and get down to Rochdale Town Hall for a truly magical experience. No tickets are needed and it’s free.

Lantern Workshops

Youngsters can also play a special part in the celebrations by coming to one of two free workshops, learning how to create their very own Christmas lantern which they can then bring to the switch on to create a sea of light at the event.

  • The first free workshop takes place at Touchstones Rochdale on Saturday 14 November from 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
  • The second workshop takes place inside the Town Hall on Saturday 21 November from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

All children must be accompanied by an adult and booking is not required.

It’s all easy to get to, with three hours free parking in all council owned car parks as well as regular Metrolink and bus services bringing you right into the heart of town.
