Details:

Broadfield Park Slopes form the natural landscape of the magnificent Grade 1 listed Rochdale Town Hall, and thanks to Rochdale Borough Council, as well as support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Rochdale Development agency will deliver an archaeological community dig over Summer 2023.

After a successful community dig on the town hall square in 2021, they are delighted to have the opportunity to deliver another!

Open to all ages, this is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you to gets hands on with the history of Rochdale town centre. RDA want you to help them uncover the story of this area from the late medieval ages through to the 1860s when the town hall was built.

You'll spend your session on site with specialist archaeologists from the University of Salford, learning how to dig safely, as well as how to clean, record and store finds, just as professional archaeologists would, so they are preserved for the future.

If you or your family are not able to take part in the dig itself, there are still ways you can get involved. Archaeologists will deliver historical lunchtime talks from 12pm - 1pm. Please email BroadfieldParkSlopes@investinrochdale.co.uk for more information.

PLEASE NOTE: In the instance of extreme weather conditions, the event may have to be cancelled.

Two sessions each day for two weeks from Saturday 22 July - Saturday 5 August:

  • 9.30am - 12pm
  • 1pm - 3.30pm
