Mayor Launches "SPONSOR A BRICK" SCHEME
Monday 15th April 2013 was an important day for Friends of the Carnegie (Castleton). His Worship the Mayor, Councillor James Gartside, accompanied by the Mayoress, Councillor Jane Gartside officially launched the Friends' major fundraising activity.
The group hopes to raise £50,000 in order to begin the makeover of the old Library on Manchester Road, Castleton, and restore it to its former glory as a Heritage and Cultural Centre, with a section specially designated to Andrew Carnegie who gave the money for the Library to be built in 1904.
The Mayor and Mayoress sponsored the first two bricks, and the Mayor is shown receiving the first one from Jean Hornby, the present Chairman of the Friends' group, who was there with some of the other members who attended.
Forms for brick sponsorship are in print at the moment and will be distributed throughout Castleton in the next couple of weeks. Please look out for them, and PLEASE HELP.
Sponsorship is £5 per brick. Why not sponsor one in memory of a loved one who is no longer with you. Or perhaps as a gift for someone who visited the building when it was a Library. You will receive a certificate for each brick you sponsor.
In addition to the Carnegie event, the Mayor also attended the start of the annual Township in Bloom competition and watched some primary school pupils, ably assisted by Billy Sheerin, planting up some flower beds on previously unused, derelict land.

members who were at the launch, and with the Carnegie in the background. The

Photo 3 shows the Mayor and Mayoress with members, this time outside the
front door of the Carnegie building. All look very windswept. The sun
was shining, but there was a very strong wind, especially on that particular
corner of the street.

and awaiting the arrival of the Mayor and Mayoress. This one is taken at
the "rounded end" of the building.
