Intro
Springhill Hospice (reg. charity no. 701798) is a 16-bed In-Patient facility providing care and support for people and families living with life-limiting illnesses across the Rochdale Borough, as well as from parts of Rossendale, Oldham and North Manchester. 2009 marked the 20th anniversary year of what has become firmly established within the community as 'The People's Hospice'.
Since opening in 1989, the Hospice has cared for thousands of patients, admitted under the care of the Hospice Doctor and Clinical Services Team, for pain relief, symptom control, respite care and pre/post chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.
The Hospice is also registered for a further 16 patients per day in its Day Hospice, provides Out-Patient clinics, a Community Support Service and offers education and study facilities in the purpose-built Margaret Geoghegan Education Centre.
The Day Hospice provides support and remedial services to patients, their families and carers who all benefit from the opportunity to relax and enjoy social contact away from their usual environment. Free transport to and from the Hospice is provided when required.
As hospice care is provided free of charge, Springhill Hospice has to cover costs by raising over £2.7m each year – around £7,400 per day – and as it receives just 30% of funding from the local NHS, the balance has to found from a variety of sources, such as public and corporate donations, five busy shops, its own lottery game, legacies, merchandise goods and a full diary of fundraising events.
