The Friends of Littleborough Stations (FoLS) are a group of volunteers who give of their time in various ways to enhance the environment of Littleborough and Smithy Bridge Stations (on the Caldervale Line between Leeds and Manchester Victoria)
Origins
FoLS was formed in 2005 with the aim of getting access ramps installed at Littleborough Station. Prior to that, Littleborough Civic Trust had worked to create gardens and secure car parking facilities at the station
What we do
We lobby for improvements to our two stations and the services they provide. In addition, we do practical work on the stations, such as planting flower tubs and herb pots, displaying art work, painting, and tidying. We encourage local schools to take an interest in their stations and rail travel
Our aims are:
- To work with volunteers and others to improve the stations and their surrounding areas;
- To encourage community involvement and ownership in conservation, environmental and creative work at and around the stations;
- To encourage local businesses to improve their own properties and to sponsor environmental enhancements at the station;
- To campaign for improved infrastructure facilities and services;
- To encourage and disseminate knowledge of the history of Littleborough Station and its place in the development of TransPennine travel;
- To work in partnership with all stakeholders to achieve these aims;
- To raise awareness of the benefits of ‘green transport plans’, the train, and the attractions of the stations
