BOWLING SEASON NEWS 2022
The first thing to say is that it was great to get back to bowling again with much less restrictive Covid measures in place.The upgrade of the green has been slow but steady with a very dry July not helping the grass. With regular repairs and reseeding etc the smoothness is coming back and the wet autumn and mild conditions a big help.
After a broken floodlight post in the spring gales repairs were made with new floodlight bulbs much brighter than yellow ones we had before..
An effort was made by members to tidy up the gardens around the green and inside clubhouse damp problems have resolved following roof repairs and redecorating.
On the playing side the Central Lancashire League for men was reduced to wednesdays only but a new Monday league was introduced .There were difficulties getting enough players for both days and the A team suffered more being relegated back to division 2.Well done David Gibson getting the A teams best average.In the CLL Monday A division John Stanger had .the best club average.Well done John for captaining both sides under difficult circumstances.the monday side finishing fourth.
The CLL B team captained by Frank Gac and stand in Elvet Smith kept the bowling going despite numbers of players away on holiday or with first team duties.Andy Butterworth had best Wednesday average and Elvet Smith on Monday..Team finished second to bottom in both leagues.More practice needed before start of next season!
Rochdale Vets captained by Sid Royle had a good season with close finishes just missing out on promotion in 3rd place in C division and losing a close game in Cup semi final .John Stanger and Sid Royle finished 1st and 2nd in C division averages- well done to them.After 6 years as Captain Sid will handover to a new leader next season.Well done Sid for all your efforts and for always having a smile whatever happened!
Covid depleted the ladies league teams and player shortage a big issue.Also the Castleton ladies team time didnt play leaving the one Castleton team.Well done Sharon for her efforts despite the setbacks and to Elaine Ferguson with the highest team average.
Finally thursday league team led by Julie Ferguson and Stuart Lewis kept a decent standard going finishing mid table.Stuart was 4th in league 2 averages Andrew Jackson 6th and Julie had the highest pairs average for the team.
And so to next season more players are needed to continue the progress some teams are making and improvement for others.The club green is improving staedily and we look forward to a great 2023!
