Half Acre House hosts ‘Mini Olympics’

Date published: 07 August 2012

Management and staff at Half Acre care home in Rochdale were inspired to hold their own ‘Mini Olympics’ last week. The idea was developed by owner Mrs. Lewis, whose daughter is involved in the Paralympic Games.

It took the enthusiasm and creativity of the Half Acre staff to create safe objects to allow residents of all ages and abilities to take part in the event, with residents each selecting an Olympic country to represent.

Celebrations began with an Olympic torch parade, followed by an engaging afternoon of entertainment inspired by a variety of different cultures.

The Milnrow Morris troupe cheered-up the day with a pom-pom routine and a ukulele player provided some northern fun, followed by the sensational Irish dancers of the Irene Plater dance school.

Residents, staff and visitors also joined in a traditional sing-along, waving their flags to ‘Rule Britannia’.

Every day over the week Half Acre held a series of events each afternoon such as a bean bag high jump and paper plate discus; improving residents’ motor skills and providing a great community activity for friends and family.

The highlight of the week was balloon volleyball. Lots of support and cheering echoed around the house, and the play-off finals were fiercely competitive.

The final day concluded the care home’s ‘Mini Olympics’ week with a presentation ceremony where residents were surprised to receive gold, silver and bronze medals for all their efforts, amidst rousing music and well-deserved applause.

Residents agreed the events had kept them busy and they had lots of fun; even asking for a ‘fun of the fair’ event later in the year.

Organiser Mrs Lewis said: “It can be difficult to motivate people with limited ability to take part in activities, but we vary what we put on offer.

“We try to match activities with the needs of the residents, which includes not only physical skills but social and emotional satisfaction too; allowing interaction with the community and families, continuing to nurture a dignified lifestyle.

“We have intellectual challenges planned and a new drama and arts project later in the year.

"It’s rewarding to see families involved too alongside the residents, some of whom are in their late 90s. We had great fun and the week slipped by very quickly.”
