BT Infinity broadband installation causes confusion

Date published: 03 August 2012

Plans to provide the ‘superfast’ fibre optic broadband service BT Infinity to those in Rochdale has been met by much confusion from residents.

Some locals were promised installation of the service in their area as long as two years ago, with this yet to materialise.

When asked about the progress of installation in the Rochdale, a BT representative said: “Every single phone line is different, and on some lines it’s available earlier than others.

"Testing the connection for various random telephone numbers, all within the Rochdale OL11 postcode, it became evident that an installation is based on individual circumstances, rather than an entire area rollout.

“Its availability is based on an individual line rather than an area. You have to take into account the length of the line, whether it’s split or not and the length from the exchange.

“It’s a case of one person can have it whilst their next door neighbour might not.”

With regard to when BT Infinity will be available to all households in the Rochdale borough, BT were unsure. They said: “We can’t say. If it was planned within the next six months, it’d be on our system. There’s not a date on there at the moment.”
