Travel advice during Olympic football matches
Date published: 18 July 2012
Bus, train and tram passengers in Greater Manchester are being advised that certain services are likely to be a lot busier when Olympic Games events are held at Old Trafford, starting next week.
Between Thursday 26 July and Tuesday 7 August, several matches will be held at Manchester United’s home ground, which will have a capacity of 74,500 seats, including quarter and semi-finals.
On weekdays, the matches will kick-off between 5.00pm and 7.45pm, which is when bus, train and tram services are at their busiest.
As a result, passengers are advised, where possible, to plan journeys around the events or to allow extra time for their journeys on match days, when services to and from the city centre and Old Trafford are expected to be much busier than normal.
Olympic football matches will be held at Old Trafford on the following dates:
Thursday 26 July: Double preliminary football match at Old Trafford, from 5pm-9.45pm
Sunday 29 July: Double preliminary football match at Old Trafford, from 12pm-4.45pm
Tuesday 31 July: Preliminary football match at Old Trafford, from 5.15pm-7.15pm
Wednesday 1 August: Preliminary football match at Old Trafford, from 5pm-7pm
Saturday 4 August: Quarter-final football match at Old Trafford, from 12pm-2pm
Monday 6 August: Semi-final football match at Old Trafford, from 7.45pm-9.45pm
Tuesday 7 August: Semi-final football match at Old Trafford, from 7.45pm-9.45pm
