Detectives have managed to retrace what they now believe to be the final movements of Christopher Brahney while he was alive.
An intensive trawl of hours of CCTV footage in Manchester city centre has now led officers to believe Christopher went to an area near to Parsonage Gardens.
Christopher, 22, was reported missing after last being seen by friends at about 11.30pm on Friday 29 June 2012, when he was at the Stone Roses concert in Heaton Park.
His body was found shortly before 9.35am on Monday 9 July 2012 in the Manchester Ship Canal near to Media City, Salford Quays.
A post-mortem examination into the cause of his death was inconclusive.
In the latest development in this investigation, detectives have released a compilation of CCTV footage that follows Christopher from Shudehill to Parsonage, off Blackfriars Street.
Detectives are now appealing to anyone who may have been in this area shortly before 2am on Saturday 30 June 2012.
Detective Inspector Debbie Oakes said: "One week ago today, we had to deliver the devastating news to Christopher's family that a body had been found, which was that of Christopher.
"Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time.
"Understandably, they have a number of questions as what exactly happened to Chris and what were the circumstances that led to his tragic death. We are continuing to work hard to try and provide them with some answers.
"I want to make it clear, however, that while we do believe that through CCTV inquiries we have managed to follow the movements of a young man we believe to be Chris, we still cannot say how and why he died. Nor do we have any evidence of his death being suspicious.
"We therefore continue to appeal to anyone who may have seen Chris walking, with this shopping bag, in Manchester city centre."
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7652.
