Speed camera dismay

Date published: 13 July 2012

Figures showing that there are now more speed camera sites in England than two years ago have been greeted with dismay by local MEP Paul Nuttall.

"So many important services have been axed in the name of austerity cuts yet speed camera sites have increased.

"While some bow down at the altar of speed cameras there it can be argued that most of them are ineffective at reducing accidents," said Mr Nuttall, UKIP Euro-MP.

"So many are merely installed as cash cows and is a way of wringing even more money out of the poor beleaguered motorist. It is not 'speeding' that causes accidents but driving too fast for the road conditions.

"But at least the figures - complied by the RAC Foundation from the 32 administrative bodies that responded to a Freedom of Information request - showed that the number of cameras that actually take pictures has fallen," said Mr Nuttall.
