Warning over health risks from fake cosmetics

Date published: 11 July 2012

The public are being warned to be on their guard against counterfeit make-up products which could pose serious health risks.

A number of fake versions of brands such as MAC, Benefit and Christian Dior have been seized by Rochdale Borough Council trading standards officers recently.

Similar counterfeit cosmetics have been discovered around the country and found to contain high levels of lead which could be harmful to anyone using them.

The council’s Public Protection team is warning that any top of the range brands found on sale at cheap prices at discount stores, market stalls or on the internet should be regarded as potentially counterfeit.

Councillor Terry Linden, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “These products certainly don’t offer a bargain as they are of much lower quality than the genuine items.

“More seriously, they present a significant health risk and also provide the counterfeiters with the funds to finance other kinds of organised crime.

“People selling these goods either to retailers or direct to the public over the internet should be aware that we will take strong action against them.”

Anyone who is suspicious about cosmetics they have bought or seen on sale should call the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 040506.
