Car wreck at Matthew Moss!

Date published: 11 July 2012

Sixteen students from Matthew Moss High School have recently been given the opportunity to participate in a unique “learning experience”, thanks to the generosity and support of Laura, Gareth and the staff at CAR.I.P.LTD (Rochdale).

As part of the school’s “Extended Curriculum” activities, two vehicles loaned to the school by CAR.I.P.LTD were totally dismantled by the learners aged between 12 and 14. They were simply given the vehicles, and a variety of tools loaned by members of staff, and then asked to solve the problem of taking the cars apart. Although members of staff were on hand to ensure safe working practice, it was the learners themselves who took responsibility for the project and made the decisions – staff actively refused to help them.

The student-led “active learning project” reflects the school’s culture which focuses on the development of confident, capable learners who are independent and can think for themselves when faced with new challenges. The ethos is to cultivate certain characteristics common to all effective learners, in the hope that the young adults leaving Matthew Moss will be resilient and flexible enough to cope with the challenges presented by the rapidly changing world of their future.

In order for their project to be successful, learners had to work collaboratively and be creative in order to solve problems – thinking critically, making meaning, changing and learning as they experienced both success and failure with their strategies.

Despite the inclement weather, which added to the challenge, an enjoyable and productive three days was had by all. Once again, our sincere thanks to CAR.I.P.LTD for helping to make it all happen.
