The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, Mr George Almond CBE DL, chose the Fusilier Museum as the venue for one of his first events of the year, the Mayoral Lunch which took place on Sunday 24 June. The Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale are for right.
The High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, George Almond CBE DL, chose the Fusilier Museum as the venue for one of his first events of the year, the Mayoral Lunch which took place on Sunday 24 June.
Mr Almond commented: "The role of the High Sheriff is more than 1,000 years old and what better venue to complement the event than the beautiful Victorian grandeur of the Gallipoli Room at The Fusilier Museum?”
The High Sheriff invited all the Mayors of Greater Manchester to have the opportunity to find out more about his role in the community. "As well as attending Royal visits to the county and attending to the High Court Judges who visit the area, I believe passionately in supporting projects that help young people,” he said.
High Sheriffs are mentioned in 27 of the 63 clauses of the Magna Carta in 1215 and in the past were a powerful force in their counties, where they were responsible for law and order and collecting taxes. However, over the centuries, the role of the High Sheriff has gradually changed and much to Mr Almond’s relief, he will not be expected to preside over executions or collect taxes during his time in office!
The Fusilier Museum is currently waiting for a decision from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop the top floor of the museum which will include a comprehensive education programme aimed at young people.
Helen Field, manager of the Fusilier Museum, said: "We are so pleased to welcome the High Sheriff to the museum. The Fusiliers have over 300 years of history and heritage displayed in our award winning museum and the High Sheriff and Mayors thoroughly enjoyed their visit.”
