School trip to Chester
Date published: 25 June 2012
The children and staff of class 3 at St John with St Michael Primary School in Shawforth visited the lovely town of Chester as part of their summer trip.
They have previously studied the Romans in history, so Chester tied in with their studies.
It was an eventful day, which begun by visiting Chester Cathedral. Here, they dressed up as monks, looked at the beautiful stained glass windows and visited the shrine of Saint Werburgh, whom was, at one time, a Princess. The children were fascinated by a portrait of Mary holding baby Jesus that was painted onto an actual cobweb.
They had their lunch at the Cathedral and then they visited the Dewa Roman Museum. At the museum, they travelled back 2000 years and looked at various archaeological items that had been dug up from under the museum. The children also had the opportunity to dress in Roman clothes and look at interactive Roman themed puzzles and games.
The day was finished off by eating ice-creams and sailing along the River Dee on a boat. The children thoroughly enjoyed their boat ride experience, as most of them had never been on a boat. Some of the views along the river were truly stunning.
Mrs Elmer, the class teacher is due to retire this summer, after many years of teaching. This was her last trip with the school. She said: "I am thrilled that we have visited Chester as my final trip, it has been a firm favourite of mine to visit and it holds so many memories. It always fascinates me with its wealth of history."
