Attempt at Guinness World Record for a choreographed hula hoop

Date published: 23 June 2012

As the crowds waited for the Olympic Flame to arrive in the Town Centre, 300 schoolchildren gathered on The Butts to make attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for a choreographed hula hoop routine - the previous record stood at 232.

Whether they achieved the record won’t be known until adjudicators have closely studied footage of the attempt, but organisers were confident the record had been broken.

Gina Davies, a teacher at St Patrick’s Primary School, said: “We brought 30 children down today. They’ve been practicing for about three weeks but the hoops have been out at break and lunch so they’ve all been practicing every minute they can. They absolutely love it, the hoops are staying until the end of term!

"Everyone in our group definitely did it without dropping their hoop and looking around I reckon we’ve broken the record."

There was a bumper calendar of events for those who made the trip to see the torch; from 10am onwards there was fun for all the family including sports demonstrations, children’s market, jaw-dropping circus acts and acrobatics as well as guided tours of the spectacular Grade 1 listed Town Hall.
