Norden Carnival
Date published: 16 June 2012
Despite the weather, hundreds of people lined the streets of Norden to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of Norden Carnival.
Heading up the parade was the Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Jim Gartside and he was followed by the local schools, community groups and businesses.
This year saw an increase in the number of floats taking part and the standards were high. Taking the Best Float award was Moss Row Allotments. Councillor Metcalfe, who judged the category said: "The attention to detail was amazing - even down to the cucumber sandwiches."
Although everyone who took part was a winner, the awards for Best Walking Group, who took the 'Cowman Trophy', were St Vincent's Playgroup. Best Dressed Girl, Emily Gooding, and Best Dressed Boy, Charlie Gooding, both from Norden Primary School, looked great in their home made car and plane. Best Dressed Adult, new for this year's carnival, was awarded to Elaine MacElvie, a nursery teacher at Whittaker Moss Primary School.
Rachel Blackburn, carnival organiser commented: "This has been the largest and best procession for a number of years.
"It was a shame about the weather but it hasn't seemed to put anyone off. The crowds were amazing coming out in the rain as usual - even those who got even wetter from the water guns on the Horse and Farrier float.
"Let's hope next year will be just as good and we get a bit of sunshine."
