Town Hall ready for Olympic Torch events
Date published: 15 June 2012
Rochdale’s magnificent Town Hall will be the setting for a range of family events as the Olympic Torch arrives in the borough on Saturday 23 June.
For those inspired by the 2012 Olympics to take up a sport themselves Rochdale Rotary Club has organised displays from organisations around the borough (10.00am – 4.00pm) to help people adopt a more active lifestyle.
The stalls will include displays on snorkelling and underwater polo, trampolining, boxing, tai chi, Rochdale Racquets Tennis Club, walk and talk groups, the TS Frobisher Sea Cadets and more.
There will also be the chance to get some exercise on the day itself with guided tours around the Town Hall every half hour (10am - 3.30pm) which will provide a fascinating insight into the building’s history.
After the Olympic Torch has passed through the town centre at 2.30pm, The Great Hall on the first floor will host a tea dance and afternoon tea (3.00 - 4.00pm). The dancing is free while the refreshments cost just £4.00 per head. Booking for afternoon tea is recommended so please call 01706 924773 to reserve your place.
If you can’t wait until afternoon tea for some nourishment there’s no need to worry - the café on the ground floor will be open all day (10.00am – 4.00pm).
Cabinet Member for IT, Highway Services, Culture and Leisure, Councillor Jacqueline Beswick, said: “Rochdale Town Hall is a wonderful part of the borough’s heritage and I’m delighted that it will be playing such a large part in our Olympic Torch celebrations.
“There will be so many great events for all the family taking place in Rochdale and Heywood that I am sure it is going to be a very special day.”
