Hornets past players Jubilee day at Mayfield

Date published: 11 June 2012

A Jubilee day celebration was held at The Mayfield Sports Centre by Rochdale Mayfield and Hornet's Ex-Players Association.

The day saw 200 energetic children aged 6 to 14 playing games against the local opposition, in order to highlight the skills that they had developed over the year.

England and Great Britain Captain and current Super League Star, Adrian Morley was guest of honour on the day. He presented the winning match trophies and kits to the proud teams.

Hornet's Ex-Player's not only sponsored the day, but also provided food and prizes for the participants and sponsored three new kits for the local teams of Rochdale. They presented these kits to Rochdale Cobras Ladies, Littleborough Under 9's and the Mayfield Under 13's.

Mayfield Under 13's coach, Chris Hilton said: "The new kit is wonderful. We can go out onto the field looking like pro’s. Having the Hornet's Ex-Players sponsoring my teams’ kit is an honour. I had an excellent career with Hornets a few years ago, along with my brother Tony!"

When the children and spectators weren’t occupied with rugby, they had various fun inflatable items to entertain them; as well as a number of sprint races on the main pitch and a Tug of War challenge. Eventually, the Mayfield NCL team were victorious after defeating the Oldham St Annes parent's in the tug of war after a nip and tuck pull.

Ex-Hornets organiser, Tony Pratt said: "It is a wonderful sight to see over 200 kids and their parents here today, taking part in our great sport of rugby. We decided to fund the day as a celebration of the sport and to give something back to the grassroots club's who work hard to develop the game in the Rochdale area."
