With the Olympic Torch Relay coming to the borough this month, local pupils have been finding out how they can promote peace and goodwill in their communities.
Activities included making giant doves and writing personal messages of peace to bring with them when they line the streets on Saturday 23 June to welcome the Torch.
The sessions, at Deeplish and Sandbrook community primary schools, were run by Peace Parade International, an independent, non-political organisation which brings together people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds from across Greater Manchester.
A highlight of the event at Sandbrook school was the presence of Olympian Jonathan Edwards who was lending his support to the project.
John Farrington, Founder of Peace Parade International, said: “We’ve been very impressed with the enthusiastic response we’ve had from young people in the borough. I’m convinced that all the doves and peace messages they have made will ensure that the Torch Relay’s visit is a truly memorable occasion.”
The young people of Sandbrook School also recently took part in the London 2012 Olympic Games NW UK National Inspire Day. After parading their Giant Peace Dove and Peace Placards with Olympian Jonathan Edwards in Exchange Square, Manchester, they sang John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ and read out their peace statements.
Councillor Donna Martin, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “I’m delighted that so many of our school pupils have been able to benefit from the activities of Peace Parade International in advance of the Olympic Torch coming to the borough.
“In addition to the thrill and excitement that the Olympic Games provide, it is important that our young people appreciate the underlying message of peace and these events have played an important part in this.”
