Huge turnout for Jubilee Carnival
Date published: 02 June 2012
The annual Milnrow, Newhey and District Carnival went off in style this Saturday (2 June) as people turned out en-masse to watch the parade through the streets.
This year’s theme was a Royal ‘Red, White and Blue’ to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, and the colourful procession was made up of brass bands, dancers, beauty queens, motorbikes and locals in fancy dress.
The parade began at 1pm from Haugh Lane, Newhey, and travelled through to Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College for a family fun day complete with a fairground and a pig roast.
The Mayor, Councillor Jim Gartside, proclaimed that the day had been a great success. He said: “It’s excellent. The floats have been phenomenal. The time and thought that goes into something like this is outstanding. Everyone’s saying it’s the best parade they’ve seen for a long time.”
The Mayoress, Councillor Jane Gartside, agreed, adding: “I think the success is due to the Jubilee. Everyone looks wonderful with all their flags.”
Paul Kettle, chairman, believes that the new school layout has helped a lot. He said: “Last year we were confined to the area where the football pitch is now. This year we’ve got a lot more space to play with and it’s allowed us to have a lot more going on. People have been commenting that it’s the best carnival we’ve had for years.”
Organiser Irene Davidson spoke of how great it was to see such a big turnout. She said: “This has been the best year so far. We’ve never seen both villages so full of people. There was so much work and publicity put into this year’s carnival, and it definitely shows. I’m so proud; I can’t wait for next year now.”
