Little India – Restaurant Review
Date published: 30 May 2012
Based on Oldham Road in Rochdale, at the former site of the Dog and Partridge pub, Little India is a clean, modern Indian restaurant that provides a unique menu with many dishes not usually found at your typical Indian establishment.
The menu comprises traditional dishes and, for the person that likes something new to try, unique house specialties.
There is a very reasonably priced wine list starting from £8.95, Draught beers such as Becks, Stella and Boddingtons with their Indian beer Cobra being served by the bottle.
Your reviewers chose to start with poppadums with a chutney tray, then a mixed starter. The chicken, lamb and sheesh kebab were all cooked to perfection and really tasty. From a list of 21 different starters we thought a mix would probably be best. You are certainly spoilt for choice!
For the main course we wanted to try a couple of unique dishes so we asked the waiter for some advice; he asked what we liked and recommended a couple of dishes, the Bengal Thawa and the Chicken Tikka Afghani.
The Thawa consisted of chicken and lamb tikka, lamb chops and king prawns, all cooked in medium spiced sauce with onions, peppers, cumin and coriander. Unfortunately the lamb chops were over-cooked and didn’t have much meat on the bone, the prawns were over cooked too and the dish for me didn’t work. The flavour of the sauce, however, was good but the dish is not one I would order again.
The Chicken Tikka Afghani is, in my opinion, a bit of an acquired taste. Fairly spicy but quite heavy in soya sauce. I have never before had a curry with soy in and it was a little bit of a surprise on the taste buds. Described as unique on the menu, I would find it impossible to disagree. However, I actually quite enjoyed the dish. Something a little different for sure.
Of course there are more traditional dishes available, Korma through to Vindaloo and all the sundries you would expect to find in a good quality Indian restaurant.
If you like seafood, there are five specials to choose from, many cooked to the spice strength of your preference.
All round we would say Little India is worth a visit. Maybe not exceptional, but good value for money and a nice environment to dine in.
