Hair-raising results at Avant-Garde themed hair awards

Date published: 30 May 2012

Hopwood Hall College’s annual Hair Awards were staged last week at the Cube, in the Performing Arts department on the Rochdale campus. 12 NVQ Hairdressing Level 3 students took part (full time and apprentices) and they invited staff, friends, family and employers to enjoy the show.

This year’s theme was ‘Avant-Garde’ and the students certainly didn’t disappoint, using their creativity and imagination to create truly hair-raising results.

The dozen Hairdressing students that were competing had to plan their ideas on a mood board, showing the inspiration behind their thinking, and then produce the total look on a model for the Avant-Garde themed showcase competition. They worked with Media Make-Up students to create the overall look for the model and Media Studies students (Performing Arts) to develop the choreography for the show. They all worked together as a team to organise the event, working on the music and lighting and took responsibility for designing leaflets and posters to promote the event. The students had just five hours to prepare everything for the show, including hair, make-up and outfits for their models.

Lynden Dixon, the course tutor, commented, “We chose the theme of Avant-Garde so that the students had to push the boundaries and think outside the box. And they certainly did! The results were phenomenal and I’m very proud of how they worked with other students around the College to develop these experimental and innovative looks.”

First prize went to Romana Kennedy with Dead Bride (see picture, right), second prize went to Alarna Morris with Blue Lily and third prize went to Lucy Goulding with Punk.

The judging panel included Naresh Jetha from Wella, Becki Lee, Hair Curriculum Leader and Beverly Fletcher, Hair & Beauty Salon Assistant.
