Volunteers Week 1-7 June 2012
Date published: 29 May 2012
Volunteers Week takes place from the 1-7 June 2012. The week is a chance to recognise the huge impact that volunteers make to our community and society in general.
As a volunteer-led organisation, Girlguiding UK is made up of a huge network of volunteers who run activities, manage accounts, advise on adventure and organise large scale events – to name only a few roles!
In Rochdale there are over 1200 girls and young women who are part of guiding and experience the excitement, adventure and fun that we can offer in a special girls only environment. Recently, girls have taken over Eureka, had a Wizard of Oz themed indoor holiday, attended Westminster Abbey for a thanks and recognition event, and travelled to Japan and Chile on girl-guiding trips. These kinds of invaluable opportunities would not have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of adult volunteers.
Lynne Scales, Brownie Leader, said: "First and foremost, guiding is of course about providing fantastic fun for girls and young women. However, volunteers themselves get a huge amount out of it as well. I have been involved with Girlguiding UK for 27 years and have gained so much from it. I recently obtained my Indoor Holiday Licence and Minibus Qualification, as well as gaining experience with event planning and electronic media skills.
"I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all the volunteers in Rochdale who make guiding possible. For anyone who is curious to see how volunteering could make a huge difference to their lives I would encourage you to get in touch or visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/interested. Not only could you make a difference to local girls and young women but believe me, you will gain just as much in return."
