Digging compost week in Greater Manchester!

Date published: 29 May 2012

Greater Manchester residents were let in on a few secrets of the perfect pile during Compost Awareness Week between the 6 and the 12 May.

During the week, three successful road shows were hosted with composting experts on hand sharing their knowledge on how to get a flourishing heap! Putting cardboard in your compost was the biggest unknown tip of the events.

There was also a popular beginners composting class at Debdale Eco Centre, where attendees were given a whole host of advice to help make the best compost for their gardens.

Ken Hogg from Bolton, who attended an event said: “I wasn’t sure this is how I wanted to spend my Saturday morning but I really enjoyed the class, I’m so glad I went!”

He added: “It was interactive, well thought out and very helpful. I can’t wait to compost at home and pass on my knowledge to the schools in Bolton.”

To complement the campaign and to encourage residents to start composting there was the chance to win garden vouchers, as well as a composting bin, which was kindly donated by Straight PLC our partner in the compost bin scheme in Greater Manchester.
Sadhna Russell from Tameside, winner of the Prize draw said: “I was delighted to win! I attended the composting road show to find out more about composting as we are keen to do more in the garden. So it was great to win a compost bin, now we can make a start, we have an area picked out already.”

Since we launched the home composting buy a bin scheme in 2010, over 2,014 compost bins have been bought in Greater Manchester, we want to increase that number.
