St John with St Michael CE Primary School receives Bronze Award

Date published: 25 May 2012

St John with St Michael CE Primary School in Shawforth came third in The Lancashire Chairman’s Challenge 2012, receiving the Bronze Award and winning £150.

St John with St Michael CE Primary pledges to: ‘Take part in cross-country running activities each week to increase our fitness. We will add up the total mileage from the whole school community and use this to map a virtual journey from Land's End to John O'Groats via St John with St Michael CE School (1393 km). During the journey we will learn about the places we are 'virtually' visiting on the way.

‘Once we have travelled to John O'Groats the children will be involved in deciding where to visit on our journey south to London for the Olympic Games. We plan to visit some of the Queen's residents to commemorate her Jubilee and also places of the children's choice which link to the curriculum themes they are covering.

‘The event will also link to the journey of the Olympic torch around Britain.’

The aim of the Chairman’s Challenge is to enable schools and children and young people to develop innovative ways to encourage their friends and families to make healthier/safer/greener lifestyle choices. The winners from each phase (primary, secondary, special and family involvement) will receive prizes for their schools to further develop activities.

The idea of the School Council category of the Chairman’s Challenge is that children and young people are empowered to really make a difference. The teacher’s role is to act as facilitator to enable the children and young people to take the lead.
