United Utilities has announced a boost for customers and the North West economy thanks to a multi-million pound investment in the region's water infrastructure.
As the North West water company announced its full year results to the city today, chief executive Steve Mogford outlined how performance was steaming ahead.
Mr Mogford said: "We've delivered a good set of results despite the tough economic climate, and customers are reaping the benefits.
"Our focus on operational performance has led to a marked improvement in customer satisfaction, and we are on track as we head towards the mid-point of our current five-year investment programme.
"Not only is it bringing real quality-of-life improvements, our capital investment programme is also breathing life into the region's economy, supporting some 9,000 jobs and contributing around £7bn through our supply chain."
The company has invested £680m in water and wastewater improvements over the last year, a 12 per cent increase on the previous year. Investment in Greater Manchester has included:
A £5million sewer expansion scheme in Didsbury, to tackle pollution to the River Mersey
- Launch of a multi-million pound two year scheme in Rochdale to expand the local sewer system and reduce sewer overflows into the Rivers Roch, Beal and Spodden
- A £3.5 million project to protect homes in Breightment, Bolton from the misery of sewer flooding
- A £5.5 million sewer expansion scheme to protect homes in Delph, Saddleworth from sewer flooding
Alongside the financial results the company also announced that it beat its leakage target, the sixth consecutive year it has either met or exceeded this goal.
