A house in Chamber House Drive was destroyed by fire yesterday (17 May 2012) evening.
The fire is believed to have started in the loft space and spread when workmen in the house on first floor heard shouts from neighbours about house being on fire, opened the loft hatch and the fire then engulfed the whole loft space, spreading to the first floor of house destroying it.
Fire crews worked for 45 min to put the fire out and hose down the houses next to the one on fire to keep them cool.
Eyewitness Emma Lord of Castleton was travelling when she noticed a thick black cloud of heavy smoke. She said: "The fire started in the attic bedroom and the roof had collapsed; it was awful to see a family home go up in flames.
"The fire fighters were throwing the families burnt belongings out of the roof.
"It was awful to watch and I was pleased when the fire crew said the the owners had come home and that there was nobody in the property."
