National Award

We are delighted to announce that Redwood School has been shortlisted for the Times Educational Award for `Outstanding Sporting Partnership and Initiative' for 2012. We are the only special school in the country to have been shortlisted and this is again a fantastic achievement. It quite rightly acknowledges the outstanding sporting and leisure programmes we have in place to support all our young people. This is the award we won last year – perhaps we can retain the title when the winners are announced in London on July 6.

Diary Date - Sports Personality of the Year Presentation

Please can you make a note of the date of this special evening at which we acknowledge the achievements of our young people. The awards evening will take place on Thursday 5 July, 7.00pm at The Gracie Fields Theatre. A formal invitation will be sent out to all families just after half term.

Resource Library

For those parents of youngsters who are diagnosed on the autistic spectrum disorder, you have the facility of loaning particular resources / books which may be of interest to you. Please contact Carol Barnes or Ann Eaton for more details.

Key stage 4 news

What an amazing week Redwood Radio has had, with the biggest hits, interviews about trips to Mandale Park, special guest interviews and much more. DJ Peter Heap would like to say a huge thank you to all the listeners for their continuous support. Check out the latest podcasts at www.key2radio.com.

4U have been busy writing out invitations for all the staff and pupils in KS4, they have been shopping for the supplies, all this hard work will go towards their accreditation. SEB are hoping to go shopping soon, the staff and pupils are going to look around for some new resources for the class. The pupils have been bouncing along on the trampoline in Rebound Therapy.

4U have been looking around school at the safety posters we have, they decided to design their own safety posters and put in their own ideas.

SSC have looked at Italy, one of their activities was to cook an Italian meal, they made lasagne, garlic bread and herby potatoes, they also did some shopping in Oldham and Todmorden.

Key Stage 3 News

Ellis has completed his ‘Metal head’ designed and created in Oulder Hill Art Club, his next project is working with Clay. Bradley had come to the end of his fabulous design, re-creating a pop art piece by Claes Oldenburg ‘the spoonbridge and cherry’ Year 8/9 red have made the pied piper stained glass windows by finger painting.

KS3 paid respects to Jack by releasing balloons in the sensory garden.

A mixed group of 8/9 orange and red visited Bents Garden Centre, they bought some plants and enjoyed a drink in the café.

Springside and Newlands visited us and spent time in the Year 7 classrooms getting to know existing year 7 pupils and staff. Pupils also stayed for lunch then went back to their schools.

In Technology, 8/9 yellow have been making (with lots of assistance) hot drinks!

6th form news

As part of their Music lesson Callan, Andrew S, Ellis, Hajira, Laura, Jake, Chantelle and Kirsty enjoyed a mini woodwind concert at the Bridgewater Hall. The group watched the concert and listened to a range of instruments being played. The concert theme was “Space Exploration” with music from a Space Odyssey, Star Trek and Star Wars.

Several of our students took part in conducting as well as being part of the rhythm section. A fabulous time was had by all. Ellis, Joshua, David, Jake K, Jordan, Nathan Alex and Andrew W took part in the Disability Taster Day organised and run by Hollingworth Lake and Link4Life. Andrew and Alex had a go at sailing and then a short cycling session around the lake. Whilst Andrew and Alex were sailing the rest of the group went cycling around the whole of the lake on specially adapted bikes. Everyone had a great time, the weather was just perfect for the activities. A big thank you to Graeme and Dave from Link4life and Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre for this wonderful opportunity.

Fran’s group have been practicing Home Management skills as part of their Vocational Education. This week the group have been looking at the differences between industrial and domestic vacuum cleaners. The group estimated how long it would take to clean the whole of 6th Form using these appliances and then actually went round and cleaned some of the rooms.
