Man arrested on suspicion of murder following death of woman

A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a woman in Rochdale.

Just before midnight on Monday 7 May 2012, police were called to a house on Darlington Road, Kirkholt, by the North West Ambulance Service, following reports a woman had been found with stab wounds.

Officers attended and discovered the body of a woman, believed to be in her 20s.

She has not been formally identified and a post mortem has not yet taken place.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder shortly before 5am this morning, Tuesday 8 May 2012.

He remains in police custody for questioning.

Chief Inspector Mark Bell, of GMP’s Rochdale division, said: “A young woman has tragically been killed and we have officers supporting her loved ones at this difficult time.

“I want to reassure the community that a team of detectives have been working tirelessly throughout the night and have acted quickly to make an arrest.

“We are very much in the early stages of this investigation but if anyone has any information that could help us I would urge them to get in touch.

“This incident will undoubtedly cause some concern in the local community and there will be extra officers in and around the area today. If any residents want to raise any concerns or pass on information I would encourage them to come and talk to us.”
