Petrus World Book Night

Date published: 02 May 2012

Service users from across the local homelessness charity, The Petrus Community, gathered to celebrate World Book Night at the Beswicke Royds Street project.

World Book Night is a global celebration of reading which took place this year on Monday 23 April.

The aim of World Book Night was to give books to those who either don't regularly read or those who want to share and spread their love of reading.

Mocha Hazlehurst, a local community member, applied to the World Book Night organisation to become a giver of books to distribute within her community. Mocha chose to give her 25 copies of John Ajvide Lindqvist's book 'Let The Right One In' to Petrus service users at an organised event.

Readings from their favourite books were given on the night by Mocha and Martin Hazlehurst, Councillor Daalat Ali and Cilla Baines MBE.

The night was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance, with calls for a regular book group from the service users.

Mocha said of the event: “It was a wonderful and warm event. I am passionate about reading and enjoyed the chance to give away a book to other readers, who made all the guest readers feel so welcome.”

For some of the people attending, this was an opportunity to find out how exciting reading can be and will hopefully increase interest in developing reading for Petrus service users in the future.
