GMFRS receives over sixty calls to weather related incidents

Date published: 30 April 2012

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service dealt with calls to over sixty weather related incidents between 8.00am and 5.00pm on Sunday 29 April 2012 as strong winds and heavy rain buffeted Greater Manchester.

The majority of incidents involved trees that had fallen over or dislodged, and they were passed to the appropriate agencies to deal with, but some instances required assistance from the fire service.

These included:

Beresford Street, Wigan, where 24 houses were affected by flooding from surface water. Four engines attended, supported by a specialist High Volume Pump vehicle, and worked to remove the water affecting the houses, pumping it into the nearby canal.

A farm in Marple where a barn roof partially collapsed, leaving a frightened horse stuck inside. The horse was taken to a safe location, while firefighters secured the building.

A large metal shed in Whitefield that caused a local resident concern. The shed had live cabling attached and had blown over. Firefighters made the shed and the electrics safe.

A building in Ashton Under Lyne where chimney pots had become dislodged. Firefighters removed four chinney pots from the roof to make the premises safe.
