Mayor of Greater Manchester to announce date for a zero-carbon Greater Manchester

Date published: 19 December 2018

The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, has announced the date for a landmark Green Summit next year.

Greater Manchester is the first UK city to devise both globally leading ambitions and science-based plans to becoming carbon-neutral, reducing carbon emissions to tackle climate change and making its fair contribution to keeping global average temperature change below 2°C.

Progress has stepped up a gear following the inaugural Summit in March this year.

Feedback from over 600 delegates and 1,200 individuals who attended listening events, has been taken on board and themed workgroups have enabled advice from expert academics, engineering and technical innovators to be put alongside the ideas and priorities of citizens, activists parents, young people, children, businesses, charities and community organisations.

This will all come together to define a 5-year plan to put Greater Manchester on the path to carbon neutrality at the Green Summit on 25 March 2019. In addition to key-note speakers the event will feature three zones aimed at exploring innovation and best practice from businesses, communities, young people and leading public sector actors.

The event will provide the opportunity for people to speak to experts in the sector, to gain inspiration from peers and to find out what you can do as an individual, business and organisation to play your part in Greater Manchester’s climate change plans. This is a free, all-day, event and places will be available on a first come first served basis.

Andy said: “This is a job for us all, businesses, community organisations, and citizens old and young. We all need to take action now, both individually and collectively, to deliver our aspirations.

“The 2018 Green Summit proved to me that Greater Manchester really cares about our environment and how our future will affect the next generation. Next year I would like to declare the date when the region will become carbon neutral and climate resilient, an ambition which will challenge us all."

Alex Ganotis, Green City Region lead added: “By taking action now, we can ensure that we put in place those measures which will make the most impact, provide people with green growth opportunities and prepare the region for a cleaner, greener future.”
