RBH celebrates five years as a mutual with day of action

Date published: 02 July 2018

RBH marked the anniversary of five years as a mutual housing society with a huge "day of action", with RBH teams joining tenant volunteers and partners to deliver over 90 volunteering activities, all with a lasting community impact.

Almost 600 RBH employees headed out on Tuesday 26 June, providing over 3,000 hours of volunteering in every corner of Rochdale Borough.

RBH is the UK's first tenant and employee co-owned mutual housing society, becoming a true mutual on 26 June 2013. RBH members are proud of what they have achieved over five mutual years, and the celebration activities helped to ensure that RBH's mutuality was brought to life in a practical way that will make a real difference across RBH neighbourhoods.

Some of the activities included:

  • RBH employees working outdoors at locations across the Borough, including planting at Falinge Park with VintageWorx, revitalising the community garden at Lower Falinge, building a new bin store at Hare Hill in Littleborough, sprucing up outside at Sandon House in central Heywood, helping out the Friends of Hopwood Park, developing the vegetable plot at Brookside Community Centre, and revitalising the gardens at Clough Court in Boarshaw.
  • The RBH IT team joined forces with BT Group volunteers to roll out free wi-fi at independent living schemes, and to provide advice and support to residents about getting online.
  • Members of the repairs team provided an expanded handyperson scheme for residents who needed a little extra helping hand on the day.
  • Members of the RBH HR and Learning team in Rochdale and Heywood promoting the RBH members charity, Rochdale & District Mind.
  • RBH contracts team members also helped out completing some DIY and decorating in the Mind cafe and office.

Ralph Hall, RBH senior electrical supervisor, who was part of the team providing the handyperson service at independent living schemes, said: “It was a really enjoyable and rewarding day, and it was great to make a difference for our tenants and communities”

Gareth Swarbrick, RBH Chief Executive, said: “We are proud to be a mutual housing society and we know the positive difference that our mutuality makes for our tenants, employees, and communities.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped to make our 'five years together' celebration such a fantastic event, which will have left a lasting impression on communities across the Borough.”

RBH said it would like to thank the local businesses who helped to support the five years together activities, including: C.E.S LTD, Triad Fabs, Rowlands Remedials, Central Networks, Hillside Printing Services, Aquatherm, Formula2, and Abbey Architectural Ironmongery.
