Rochdale’s Top 10 Ratepayers Revealed

From 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2015, Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council will collect an estimated £60.60million in business rates of which they will keep £29.14million to spend locally.

New research by local business rates expert Paul Turner-Mitchell reveals that the borough’s top 10 ratepayers between them contribute 16 per cent of the entire property tax take with retail leading the way occupying eight of the 10 top spots.

The borough’s two biggest ratepayers are located at Kingsway Business Park with JD Sports and Asda paying £1.5million and £1.49million in business rates for their distribution facilities.

Argos occupy third spot with their huge 46,838m2 warehouse in Heywood paying £1.06million.

Rochdale Council are equal 7th on the list with Scout Moor Wind Farm paying £0.78million in business rates for their offices at Number One Riverside.

All of the borough’s biggest superstores also feature.

The introduction of business rate retention meant that from April 2013 a significant part of the Council’s budget became dependent on the amount of business rates collected from its area.
