Special schools

Since being elected in 2002 I have been on the board of governors of first Birtle View special school, and latterly of Newlands special school. It has always had an excellent OFSTED report and would be hard to beat. The dedicated staff make every child feel special and valued, but they are motivated to enjoy all forms of learning. So, it has come as quite a shock to learn that parents are not always being made aware of the existance of the boroughs special schools and children are being placed in mainstream when it is totally unsuitable for them. Children with special needs or profound and multiple learning and behavioural difficulties are entitled to a full time free place from the age of 3. This will be in small classes with a high ratio of teachers and teaching assistants per pupil. The pupils come from a broad spectrum of problems from Downs to Aspergers and various degrees of Autism etc, some are able to cope with certain lessons in mainstream with support and consequently inclusion links are very good. They share a school site with Hollin primary and have links with other primary and secondary schools. So if you know someone with a child with special needs do tell them to look into sending them to Newlands and give them the best possible start to their education in a caring environment in a new and purpose built school with sensory rooms, a hydrotherapy pool, soft play area, and all the latest technology.
