Family come first

Today I went to the Disability Awareness Day at Richmond Hall hosted by MP Paul Rowen and met some fantastic people. It was a real eye opener listening to some of their experiences of being in a wheelchair.

We were put into groups and asked to list 5 major issues both in and out of disablement and we all had plenty to say our groups concerns were around:

*Awareness

*Transport

*Benefit forms

*Heating

* Joined up services

To me a postcode lottery should not exist or be an issue, but it does and I have had first hand experience of this with a close family member.

Sadly I had to leave early as I received a call that my sister had fallen downstairs and broken her shoulder and been admitted to Calderdale Hospital - this was for me a very anxious and disturbing phone call as for 12 months I have been asking for help but she didn’t come under Rochdale. I went to visit her she was in a lot of pain and is quite ill but now hopefully someone will listen.

She is my sister, I need help in keeping her safe.

After today’s meeting with these extraordinary brave and fantastic people I can at last see a light, but dear me why do we have to fight so hard for help for the most vulnerable?

And if me as a Councillor for RMBC has struggled what chance have you I ask?

I just thank god this issue is being looked at because first and foremost in my life my family come first…
