Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club at the Boston Rowing Marathon 2015

Date published: 26 September 2015

Five crews from Hollingworth Lake Rowing Club joined crews from 35 clubs setting off from Lincoln Rowing Club to take part in one of the longest rowing races in the world. The 50 kilometre, 31 mile course downstream on the River Witham is an exceptional feat of endurance and perseverance, ending at Boston Rowing Club.

Four junior crews and one senior crew rowed in warm sunshine for up to six hours having spent six weeks preparing with a hard training regime of up to 100km of rowing per week.

The youngest of the crews was a WJ15 quad, Hannah Lowe, Molly Archbold, Maggie Page, Sally Tisdall and Sophie Webb coxing. They finished in five hours and four minutes, winning their race by an impressive 34 minutes.

The only single sculler was Tom Bullock who undertook the long lonely race with great determination, finishing in an excellent time of 5 hours three minutes.

Tom’s sister, Amy Bullock, competed with her doubles partner, Laura Aspinall in the WJ18 category, completing the 31 miles in just four hours and 46 minutes.

Harriet Jackson and Jess Pilkington in a WJ16 double came in a close second with a time of five hours, one minute and 32 seconds, just 16 seconds behind the winners.

The senior crew consisted of two of the quad crew, Janet Lowe and Ruth Archbold.

Undertaking the challenge with the aim of finishing the marathon, regardless of the time, Janet and Ruth were delighted with their time of five hours and 56 minutes.

Club captain, Ian John, said he was: “Very impressed with all the commitment to training and the fantastic achievements on the day. It is no mean feat to row 31 miles and all the crews should be very proud of themselves, as everyone at the Club is proud of them.”
